LOVE LETTERS, 2005

Multi-media installation—collected letters, framed black and white photographs

Through the perspective of letters and cards written to the artist during the years 1976-1991, this installation explores the pressures associated with adolescent male love and sexuality. Ranging from crude remarks meant to showcase  “machismo” to fragile declarations of love and loss, these letters reveal how the relationship between sex and love for adolescent males is far more complicated and tenuous than what we usually see in American popular culture. Framed senior high school yearbook snapshots personalize these letters, as does the handwriting that inscribes their difficult passage from boyhood to manhood.
