TO ALL THE GIRLS I LOVED BEFORE
acrylic on canvas, 20″ x 24″, 1997
To All the Girls I Loved Before was my response to a song that was played a lot on the radio in the eighties. I never liked the song. I felt it was sappy and sentimental. The song relates all the happy memories from the singer’s old romances. He “dedicates this song” to all his ex-girlfriends. When I think of my ex-girlfriends, I don’t think of the happy times. I think of all the fights and arguments, the anger and the pain of breaking up. There are usually good reasons why my ex-girlfriends are my ex-girlfriends and I am their ex-boyfriend.
